FAQS

What will the weather be like? What should I wear? What do I need to pack?

August is one of the most beautiful months in the Highlands of Scotland! Expect average temperatures to be highs around 65º F and lows around 49º F. Alladale is a micro-climate which also means to expect the unexpected! Temperatures can rise and drop quickly, and rain can arrive at a moment's notice. Wear comfortable clothing for moving around in yoga practices, pack layers of clothing for hiking in multiple temperatures, and have comfortable hiking boots or shoes. Alladale has hiking poles, wellington boots, hats, extra jackets and more in their stock room to borrow if you need extra layers or support for the hikes.

Will my mobile phone and electronics work at Alladale? Is there internet?

Alladale does have basic internet. You may or may not get a mobile signal depending on where you are on the property. Call your mobile phone service provider to check on rates and availability in the area of Scotland we are visiting. It is often cost-effective to purchase an international plan before going abroad so you can use your mobile phone while traveling. Electronics will work in Scotland but you need a plug adapter and sometimes a converter. A Type G plug adapter is needed for the United Kingdom and if your electronic devices are not marked to accept up to 240V, you will also need an adapter.

The property is immense. Can I hike on my own or will I get lost? Are there dangerous wild animals?

Included in your retreat are two guided hikes with the Alladale rangers. This will help you get the lay of the land so you can enjoy hiking on your own. There are hikes you can do on your own without any fear of getting lost, and there are many clear landmarks you will learn to navigate hiking Alladale's beautiful hills on your own if you choose. There are wild animals at Alladale including many bird species, Highland cattle, and various small mammals. It is always good advice to leave the animals alone.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, you need a valid passport to enter and exit the United Kingdom. Check your passport now and make sure it does not need to be renewed. If it does need to be renewed, do it now! Your passport must be valid beyond your booked return date home to the United States.

Can I use US Dollars?

The United Kingdom uses the Pound Sterling (GBP). You can either exchange dollars for pounds or you can take out local currency from an ATM upon arrival. Check with your bank before your trip to confirm fees associated with using international ATMs and transactions. It's always recommended to let your bank know you are traveling abroad to avoid any interruption to your banking services.

Do I have to eat haggis? What are Scottish food and the meals at the retreat like?

You are welcome to eat whatever you like! The meals at Alladale are deliciously prepared from local produce. Expect meals tailored to your dietary needs, delicious and modern. There will always be options for every palate! Breakfast may include eggs, fruit, homemade breads, porridge oats and sausage. Lunch may be packed for a hike or sit down with a simple starter and hearty main dish. Dinner is a seated and more formal affair at Alladale - appetizer, salad, main course and of course dessert. There will be a selection of wine and beer at dinner.

Should I leave a tip? How much?

Tips are welcome for service that is enjoyed. We usually leave a group tip to be divided amongst all the employees who have helped during our stay. You are invited to contribute what you feel reflects the service you received.

Which side of the road do I drive on?

Drive on the left side of the road if you rent a car :)

Will I hear bagpipes?

Maybe! If you would like to add any cultural experiences to your retreat like a bagpipe performance, castle visit, local town tour, whiskey tasting or something else entirely, please reach out as soon as possible for the best selection and availability.
